The patented Swingaway frame allows rear swinging doors, rear barn style doors and rear liftgates to open on almost all vehicles without problem. There are a few vehicles with a clearance issue, if you own one of the vehicles below, the Swingaway does not allow for full clearance.
3. Will the StowAway2 fit my vehicle?
The StowAway2 Hitch Mounted Cargo Carriers and Racks will fit any vehicle equipped with a 2" receiver hitch, commonly found on most SUVs, RVs, trucks, etc. You will know you have a Class III or IV receiver hitch if it measures 2 inches square on the inside dimension. The StowAway2 LT Cargo Carrier will fit on any vehicle with the smaller Class II receiver hitch. A Class II receiver hitch measures 1-1/4 square.
The StowAway2 has a five year warranty on defective parts. The manufacturer will, at their sole discretion, replace or repair the defective unit. Contact the manufacturer (1-800-943-5377) directly to make your claim and provide proof of purchase. Unless otherwise authorized, return transportation charges must be prepaid by the purchaser.
The hitch tightener (#020.6) is a bolt on piece of hardware, designed to alleviate the vibration or play that can occur at the junction of the hitch and hitch receiver. This vibration does not affect the performance or safety of the StowAway2 cargo carrier, but can be a nuisance on uneven road surfaces. Sporto Motoring offers the hitch tightener free with all models.
7. The Towing Models maximum trailer tongue weight is 100 lbs. What does tongue weight mean, and how does that affect my carrying capacity?
Tongue weight is the force required to lift the tongue of the trailer from the ground to the receiver hitch. Your trailer tongue weight and the weight of the gear in your cargo box can equal a combined weight of no more than 200 pounds.
The StowAway2 is equipped with an automotive grade weather seal all around the junction of the lid and base. While this seal will keep most water and dust out, the unit is not waterproof. Very small amounts of moisture can seep into the box under severe weather conditions. Items loaded into the StowAway2 should be appropriately protected during wet conditions.
9. I have a spare tire on the back of my vehicle, will the Swingaway model fit on my vehicle?
Possibly, the Swingaway has six inches of clearance from the hitch pin hole to the top of the lid when open vertically. To allow proper fit, your spare tire must not extend further than six inches beyond your hitch pin hole.
The Swingaway frame pivots a full 180 degrees on a pivot point situated on the passenger (right) side of the vehicle. The frame uses a convenient "slam fit" spring loaded closure device located on the backside of the cargo box. When in the fully open position the user will have clear access to the vehicle's rear doors and compartment.
16. Can you put a bike rack into the receiver hitch of the Towing model?
The StowAway2 Towing Model is designed to Tow light duty trailers only. You should not install hitch mounted bike racks inside the Towing Model's receiver hitch.
The Cargo Box is molded from an ultra durable low density polyethylene. This same material has been tested under severe loads without cracking or failing.
19. Should I be concerned with my vehicle's exhaust affecting the StowAway2?
In almost all cases, there is no issue with the vehicle's exhaust. However, the StowAway2 should not be installed on a vehicle equipped with an exhaust system that directs the engine exhaust directly onto the cargo box, as damage to the box and its contents may occur. The tailpipe must direct the exhaust away from the cargo box, either downward or to the side, as is common with most standard exhaust systems. The distance from the tip of the tailpipe to the cargo box should be a minimum of 14".
