HISTORY OF SIGN: Studebaker began in 1856 as a builder of wagons and became a major manufacturer during the Civil War. The company began producing automobiles in 1902 and was one of the major U.S. car companies through the last half of the twentieth century. By the 1950s, Studebaker was falling far behind the Big Three in sales. A merger with Packard in 1956 failed to stop the slide, and by the end of 1963 most Studebaker production in the U.S. ended. Studebakers were produced in Hamilton, Ontario until 1966.
